The ISG Human-Centered Design Community of Practice (HCD CoP) exists so that practitioners and those passionate about design can learn, share, and apply HCD knowledge

These monthly information sessions involve participation by UX designers and researchers, engineers, product managers, and anyone passionate about human-centered design. During these online sessions speakers share their experiences and insights with the community to support continued learning around important HCD topics. Recent programs have included: Brainstorm Better: Improving a Critical SkillUncover Problems and Discover Opportunities with Usability TestingLean UX Approaches for Agile Environments, and Improve Customer Experience with Content Strategy.

Our guiding principles for the community are to:

-        Elevate HCD literacy and understanding

-        Bring a human focus to problem solving

-        Talk about challenges and unsolved problems

-        Make collaboration easy

-        Listen to customers

-        Work in the open

We encourage everyone to participate in the community so that we can continue to grow the application of HCD across ISG. Please register below for an upcoming session.

If you’re interested in sharing your work and insights at an CoP event, please send an email to: hcd@hcqis.org

Validating and Improving Navigation with Tree Testing

Tree testing is a research method that allows you to understand how people navigate and discover information with a website or app. It sounds simple, but you can learn a lot by presenting a text-only version of the hierarchy of a website and asking people where they expect to find a piece of content.

Tree testing can be done by plugging in existing information architecture to make iterative improvements to a live experience, and even answer critical questions before the creation of a prototype:

  • Do the naming conventions make sense?

  • Is content grouped logically?

  • Can people quickly find what they need? If not, what is blocking them?

  • What are the most common paths taken to complete key tasks?

Join the HCD Community of Practice of Friday, August 28, at 1 PM with Senior UX Researcher Mike Eng from HQR, who will share a recent tree testing study and findings.

Following a presentation, we will transition to a panel with Mike and HQR team members including Lead User Researcher Ian Lowrie and Content Strategist Stephanie Warren.  Senior Design Strategist Chelsea Hunt, from the HCD Center of Excellence, will join as the moderator to discuss:

  • How the study informed future information architecture and reporting infrastructure decisions

  • The broader navigation approach for HQR

  • Background on how they completed the test, including communication and recruitment conversion

Registration will open soon. For now, mark your calendar to save the date.
