We are constantly collaborating with teammates and creating content for other users to consume in Confluence and Jira — attaching a screenshot and tagging a team member to review a Jira issue; creating an informational page in Confluence with applicable videos and images included; etc. While we may be thinking about how to make this content more interesting and exciting, we don't always consider how accessible it is.

According to the CDC, one in four adults in the United States has a disability. Users with varying degrees of visual, cognitive, auditory, speech, and motor disabilities will have vastly different experiences with the same content. We should strive to make our content just as accessible to users with disabilities as it is to those without disabilities. Keep reading for a few ways to increase accessibility in QualityNet Confluence and Jira.

Confluence

Add Alt Text to Images

  1. Insert an image into a Confluence page. 
  2. Click on the image and select Properties.
  3. Enter title text (appears when the cursor hovers over the image) and alt text (used by screen readers and when the image cannot be shown) into their respective fields and select Save.

Add Captions to Videos

Whenever possible, make sure that videos added to Confluence pages include captions.

Ensure the Colors Used in Your Spaces 'Look and Feel' are WCAG AA & WCAG AAA Conforming

  1. Navigate to Space Tools in the left-hand toolbar and select Look and Feel.
  2. Look at the Color Scheme tab.
  3. Space Admins have the ability to create and implement a Custom Color Scheme by selecting Edit and using the Color Picker to select custom colors. If you choose to do so, make sure that the color contrast of your new selections is Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) conforming. Note: the default Global Color Scheme is compliant.

Be Mindful of Color Contrast of Graphics

Whenever possible, make sure that the color contrast is compliant for graphics that you add to Confluence. For example, if you create a graphic that contains text, make sure the colors and font size are compliant.

Jira

Add Descriptive Naming for Attachments 

When attaching images to Jira issues, make sure the name of the image accurately reflects the image. The image's name will be used as the alt text, and a descriptive name will allow the image to be described for users utilizing screen readers. Do this by naming the image (or renaming if necessary) on your computer before attaching it to the issue in Jira.
