Sumit Mohan is an Associate Professor of Medicine & Epidemiology at Columbia University and leads the Columbia University Renal Epidemiology (CURE) group. Dr. Mohan is a board-certified nephrologist and a National Institutes of Health–funded clinical researcher. His research has focused on identifying/lowering barriers to care, reducing disparities, and improving outcomes for patients with kidney disease, particularly those with end stage renal disease (ESRD). His research group was the first to identify the weekend effect on organ discards, the first to clearly demonstrate adverse consequences of declining deceased donors for patients, and the first to note the contribution of variations of organ acceptance practices as the primary contributor to the wide variation in access to deceased donor kidney transplantation currently observed in the United States.

Dr. Mohan has significant experience in donation and utilization change package strategy areas and with change management and leadership in support of improvement teams, including serving as a National Kidney Expert for the ESRD National Coordinating Center to develop two change packages. His extensive experience includes presently being a member of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Technical Expert Panel for Practitioner Level Measurement of Effective Access to Kidney Transplantation and the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients/Health Resources & Services Administration (SRTR/HRSA) Transplant Metrics Review Steering Committee. He is an award-winning clinical educator and is currently the Deputy Editor of Kidney International Reports. Dr. Mohan has an MBBS from Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, India, and an MPH from the University of Northern Colorado. He completed an Internal Medicine residency and Nephrology and Hypertension fellowship at Harlem Hospital Center and a Renal Transplant fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center in New York.
